This maiden edition of the book 'Understanding Social Institutions' is concerned with a very important concept in the social sciences known as social institutions. As fishes live inside water, so do humans live inside societies. Similarly, a society is made up of social institutions the way water is made up of atoms of oxygen and hydrogen. The third similarity is that humans cannot survive without institutions the way fishes cannot survive outside water. Whatever we do, whatever we become, whatever we are, et cetera, is as a result of special configurations of the institutions in our society. Yet this very important concept is not understood by majority of people living in societies. With the exception of scholars in the social sciences, society dwellers lack
knowledge of the meaning components. characteristics and functions of social institutions. Even in the social sciences, institutions are treated as abstract entities or things that can be found out there. Consequently, undergraduate students in this field struggle to get a firm grip of the course content of social institutions to be able to pass the registered course. The book was therefore written to clarify this important concept, create awareness of their existence; thereby demystifying and simplifying the mysteries and complexities of social institutions. It was written in simple clear language to make accessible to people from all works of life. The book is organized under six chapters. Chapter one is the introductory chapter were the meaning, components, origin, characteristics, types and functions of social institutions are treated. Other chapters are as follows: Chapter two: (family institutions), Chapter three: (educational institutions, Chapter four: (economic institutions, Chapter five: (political institutions), and Chapter six: (religious institutions).
